|Abstract:||Transactional analysis, originated by the contributions of psychiatrist Eric Berne to the field of psychology, has been employed as a psychoanalytical theory to interpret characters’ behavior in literary works but none of Eugene O’Neill’s plays have been studied through this comprehensive theory. Using major works written on transactional analysis, the present thesis renders a psychological insight into the characters’ behavior in O’Neill’s 1956 masterpiece Long Day’s Journey into Night and his 1924 play All God’s Chillun Got Wings. To do so, first the theory and its typical concepts are introduced, then the main characters of each play are separately diagnosed. The application of the theory to All God’s Chillun Got Wings exposes Jim Harris in a challenge between his neopsyche and his prejudicial exteropsyche with the exteropsyche turning out to be the winner which contaminates the other and creates a neurotic inferiority complex. It also uncovers that Ella has been harassed by her prejudicial exteropsyche and developed an exclusion of the neopsyche and as a result has become psychotic and schizophrenic. Plus, the existence of a symbiosis between Ella and Jim is detected. The transactional analysis reading of Long Day’s Journey into Night, points out James Tyrone’s active exteropsyche and double contamination of his neopsyche by exteropsychic messages and his regressive archaeopsyche. It also depicts Jamie Tyrone’s hyper-cathected archaeopsyche which governs his personality and a contamination in his psychic order which coupled with his inferiority feeling has left him ambitionless and cynically defensive. And finally it represents Edmund Tyrone’s neopsyche and positive strokes outweighed by injunctions that contaminate his psychic order.|
